Let’s sneak into a Graphic Design class to see how they practice the screen printing techniques!
Screen printing (or silkscreen) is an easy and simple traditional printing technique that creates highly aesthetic, sophisticated products with harmonious colours and eye-catching visual effects. This technique allows printing on all different materials at a lower cost compared to other types of printing.
The required supplies for the silkscreen include: screen, frame, fabric ink, squeegee, impermeable substance, and some materials.
Screen printing is a printing method using a woven mesh (made of polyester or metallic), stretching over a wooden or aluminium alloy rectangular frame. This technique appeared in Europe in 1925 through printing on paper, cardboard, glass, metallic sheet and leatherette fabric.
Before printing, the design is exposed onto the screen before a squeegee is used to spread the ink over the open mesh.
Under the pressure of the squeegee, ink is forced through the mesh and transfer of the design goes onto the surface underneath, creating the desired print. Here, the students are printing a graphic quote and waiting for the result to come out.
After pulling the squeegee through the ink, it will absorb gradually within 3 minutes, after that, you can pick the screen up gently to avoid ink spilling onto the printing surface.
